World Day for Cultural Diversity

Every year on May 21, The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, which highlights the richness of the world’s cultures, and the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.

Purpose:

  • Urges discussion and cooperation among the world’s people regardless of race, religion, language, disability, culture or tradition.
  • Tolerance and respect for diversity as well as the empowerment of women.
  • Prosperity, sustainable development and global peace will be achieved as a result
  • Support sustainable systems of governance for culture
  • Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals
  • Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks
  • Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms

Why Does Cultural Diversity Matter?:

Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, with respect to economic growth and as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral, and spiritual life. This is captured in the UNESCO Culture Conventions, which provide a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity as an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development.

  • Visit an art exhibit or museum dedicated to other cultures
  • Learn about traditional celebrations from other cultures
  • Watch an international film
  • Listen to music from other cultures
  • Play a sport/game relation to another culture
  • Volunteer with an organization for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Learn another Language
